What’s the Walk It Out Wednesday Challenge?
The challenge is a fun, 12-week initiative to help you start a regular walking habit.
Each Wednesday, walkers will log their steps to build a routine and compete for prizes.
Why should I join?
Participating will help you:
- Improve your physical and mental wellness
- Create a healthy habit
- Stay motivated
- Be part of the movement toward better health
When is the challenge?
The challenge is May 27 through August 12, 2026. You can join any time!
Who can join?
Everyone in the DeKalb County community is welcome, including:
- Residents
- Employees
- Students
- Neighborhood association members
- Faith group member
Can youth join?
Yes! Children and teens ages 6 and older are welcome, too. However, a parent or legal guardian must give consent on their walker registration form. We encourage youth to participate with a parent, guardian, or other adult to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience.
Can I join as part of a team?
Absolutely. You can form or join a team with coworkers, friends, family members, or neighbors to help keep everyone motivated and having fun.
When should I walk?
You can walk anytime on Wednesdays. We hope that you’ll walk more than once a week. However, Wednesday walks are the official activity for the challenge.
Where should I walk?
Anywhere that works for you.
- Neighborhoods
- Parks or trails
- Workplaces
- Schools
- Indoor spaces like malls or gyms
Do I have to be an experienced walker or athlete?
Not at all. The challenge is open to all fitness levels.
Any pace. Any place. Just walk!
How do I track and log my steps?
You can track your steps using:
- Smartphone app
- Fitness tracker
- Pedometer
- Estimate
Log your steps.
Are there prizes or incentives?
Yes! Walkers can earn prizes. See the Prizes page.
Is there a cost?
No.
Who’s sponsoring the challenge?
DeKalb Public Health’s Local Efforts towards Addressing Disparities in DeKalb (LEAD DeKalb) initative is sponsoring the challenge. The challenge is part of the Walk It Out Campaign to encourage being active, building healthy habits, and connecting with your community.
LEAD DeKalb is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) program.
The Walk It Out Campaign is part of the CDC’s Active People, Healthy Nation initiative to get 27 million people more active by 2027.
